Commodity prices,Oil & wheat

Friday, February 29th, 2008

As a former Wall Street OTC trader & market maker, for most of my 20’s, I have watched the growth of Internet trading in commodities, with a large amount of skepticism, and a little bit of envy.

The trading of these commodities on exchanges like the Mercantile, with 24 hour access through the internet, has turned this type of trading into something akin to the Old Wild West, of gunslingers, loose or difficult regulation, and anything goes…. Sort of like being an OTC market maker in the days before , and at the beginning of Nasdaq

The potential for manipulation of prices, and the creation of artificial shortages and spikes up and down in pricing..makes me salivate. Apparently  I was born too soon,  If this technology had existed in the “Old” Days, Boy, would we have had fun…..Shhhhh…Don’t tell anyone, why get in trouble for stuff I didn’t do,(but might have, if the technology had been there)  we did enough “playing”, with the tools we had at the time..

Wheat, the scarce staple

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Wheat prices are rising on all levels of the economy. The cost of All types of agriculture is rising, with wheat now becoming the next scarce commodity chasing pricing. Saudi Arabia announced  this week, that they will no longer be an exporter of wheat, instead intending to import most of their needs. This coupled with harsh(see global warming nonsense) growing seasons, and the former Soviet republics now restricting wheat exports, not to mention the falling dollar, and we find products made from wheat are going up in price. This morning, an article in the New York papers lamented that the cost of a plain bagel has jumped from an average of .60 each last year, to an average cost ,retail, of 1.00 each, City wide. This is  directly affected by cost of wheat. Bread, the staple of life is now becoming dear in price, and heading higher. Combine this with the rising corn prices due to alternative fuel production and many of the above causes and we find problems for most Americans, except for the large farm combines(perhaps the next scandal) but most of those are probably owned my multinational corporations, controlled by our enemies…yikes… WAKE UP AMERICA

Global warming, are you joshing me?

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

All this talk about global warming, had me putting my heavy jackets and sweaters away for the winter.

Tell my poor tootsies…It is COLD outside, I had to walk Matilda(puppy) with 7 layers of clothing this morning, and my extremities and any exposed skin, soon became numb.  Where is global warming when you really need it?

Come on Spring,  March is starting like a Lion…now go out like a lamb…..And warm me up!!!!!!!!

William F Buckley passed away?

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Bt accident, I just heard that William F Buckley passed away today, Wednesday, 2/27/08.

Now He was not a big hero to me,  but I grew up respecting his opinions, reading his words as a balance  to the Liberal press in New York City.

I believe he was honest, and a true believer in his Conservative views, an antecedent to Ronald Regan..

I’m not really qualified to talk about him in depth, I knew him as a man of principles, and a patriotic American, but too Conservative for my taste in the decades of the 70’s, but today I admire his legacy, of respect for tradition.

What I don’t understand is, why there is hardly ant mention of his passing…There was a feature article about a sports announcer for the Pittsburgh Steelers passing away, but no mention of Buckley.

What kind of priority do we have in this society that doesn’t at least give both men a mention?

The Democratic Nomination* just an observation*

Hillary Clinton(Senator)  claims her campaign had nothing to do with the widely circulated photo of Senator Obama dressed in Muslim garb..

If you believe that, I have a nice old bridge for sale in Brooklyn.

By the way, the outfit with the red shirt contrasting with the white garb, if he put on a white beard would look sort of like old St Nick…Just a silly thought, not meant to be disrespectful to anyones religion, but I still think laughing at ourselves is necessary to keep us sane

The Clinton image is spreading

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

From looking at photos and the T V, it appears to me that this difficult primary run is taking its toll of Senator Clinton. She appears to have put on some weight, maybe 10-12pounds, and the stress lines are showing around her eyes and her mouth.

Running for President is hard work, great pressure, and has to have a destructive effect on your health.

Perhaps I could show Mrs Clinton how to eat healthy, and methods for dealing with the stress.  Works for me

Are you kidding me?? Farakhan

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

I just read a quotation by the great social libertarian, and equalitarian, Louis Farakhan…

He was praising Barak Obama ” This young man(Senator Obama), is the hope of the entire world, that America will change and be made better. This young man is capturing audiences of Black ,Brown, Red,and Yellow…”

Excuse me.  I think I missed something. Mr Farakhan, didn’t you leave something out?  perhaps a color,  or does White no longer count as one of the races that inhabit, and indeed founded this great Country.

I include all races ( of good people) in the roll call of my country…What is your problem. If you want to practice exclusionism. do it someplace else.

If you are trying to help Senator Obama get elected, best to do it by keeping your comments to yourself.

If I was elected President I would include you…Generalizations breed antagonism and hatred.  Nice job

Just an Observation III

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

It’s interesting,on January 21,2008 I wrote my first  “Just an Observation” Blog.

It was about my ” neurotic” habit of washing lemons very carefully, and trying to avoid use of the peel at  all, if possible,

Last week, I noticed a feature article on the current events page, highliting the lemon peel, and the bacteria and other nasty stuff that ends up on the outside of a lemon,  including, I’m sure, poison, bug spray, etc.

Those sound like my words, hmmmm, for what ever it’s worth, I have a ton of that stuff. A whole life time of very intelligent, neurotic, nutty observations, that make sense..Consider the first one a gift. My Momma didn’t have any stupid kids, you can ask my sister

Anyone who knows me, has heard me mention the lemon peel thing for years & years
